In 1836, John Reed built a saw mill on Cascade Creek. The mill worked to produce wood for the construction of his house. Mill Valley was named for this mill, which has since been restored and stands just a few blocks from downtown in Old Mill Park.
Only ten minutes from San Francisco, Mill Valley is located on the eastern slope of Mt. Tamalpais. There is a very peaceful, rural feel to the area as homes are surrounded by the truly majestic redwoods and abundant pines. Set back far enough from the main roadways, you’ll feel as though you’ve gone back through time to a quieter, simpler era.

Mill Valley was incorporated in 1900 and the town was quick to make its mark. The Outdoor Art Club, founded in 1902, is still active in the community and works to preserve the natural beauty of the area. In 1905, the Dipsea Race was run for the first time. At 7.1 miles long, it is the second oldest race in the country. This quaint town also hosts the Fall Arts Festival and the Mill Valley Film Festival, drawing thousands to experience these great events each year.
