San Rafael is located on the land that was once the Mission San Rafael Arcangel. Father Prefect Vicente Francisco de Sarria, along with three friars and a group of soldiers, established the mission on December 14, 1817. The mission was rebuilt in the city of San Rafael and although the buildings are not the originals, the museum houses a plethora of authentic artifacts.
